The Tour de France Femmes Just Got Harder Than Ever, and That Changes the Training

Nine stages, 1,175 km, 18,795 m of climbing, and Mont Ventoux on stage 7. The 2026 route is the biggest yet, and what it demands is a different quality than the one most of us train.

The 2026 Tour de France Femmes started on 1 August in Lausanne and finishes in Nice on 9 August. Nine stages, 1,175 kilometres, and 18,795 metres of climbing: the longest route and the most vertical the race has had since it returned in 2022. Three flat stages, three hilly, two mountain stages, one individual time trial into Dijon, and a queen stage that finishes on top of Mont Ventoux at 1,910 m.

Read that list again, because the shape of it is the interesting part. This is not a short race with one big day bolted on. It is nine days that get harder as they go, with the hardest one deep enough into the race that nobody arrives at it fresh.

Nine Days Is Its Own Event

There is a habit in amateur training of treating a hard day as a hard day, full stop. You did four hours with climbing, you were tired, you recovered, the number went into the log. What that framing misses is that the demand of a stage race is not the individual stage. It is the eighth one.

Mont Ventoux on stage 7 is the obvious headline, and it deserves to be. But Ventoux at the end of a long day on fresh legs and Ventoux with six days of racing already in the legs are physiologically different problems. The first is a power test. The second is a durability test wearing a power test's clothes, and durability is the quality that gets trained least deliberately by almost everyone, because it is invisible on a Tuesday.

I wrote about this last week off the back of the men's race, and the mechanism is the same one: the gap between what you can produce fresh and what you can still produce after hours, or days, of accumulated fatigue. A route with 18,795 m of climbing across nine days does not reward the biggest engine. It rewards the smallest fade.

The Time Trial Is Not a Rest Day

The stage that will decide more than it looks like it should is the individual time trial into Dijon. Time trials are the one stage type where accumulated fatigue has nowhere to hide: no wheel to sit on, no tactical lull, no group to carry you through a bad twenty minutes. Whatever your fade actually is, a solo effort against the clock reads it out loud.

For anyone training toward a long event of their own, that is the most transferable thing on this route. If you want to know where your durability sits, you do not need a mountain. You need one honest solo effort at the end of a week that was already hard, and the discipline to compare it against the same effort at the start of a rested one.

What This Route Would Ask You To Train

You are almost certainly not riding to Nice next week. The demands still translate, and they translate better than a one-day race does, because most amateur goals are much closer to "repeated long days" than to "one maximal effort."

Back-to-back long days, not one hero ride. A Saturday five-hour ride followed by a Sunday three-hour ride with real intensity in it teaches your body something the Saturday alone does not. Stage racing is the extreme version of a pattern most weekend riders already half-live: the second day is where the adaptation is, and it is also the day most people quietly skip.

Climbing volume over climbing intensity. 18,795 m across nine days averages a bit over 2,000 m a day. Very little of that is ridden at threshold. The training version is not more hill repeats, it is more time on gradient at an effort you could hold a conversation at, until long climbs stop being an event and start being terrain.

A fuelling plan you have actually rehearsed. Nine days of racing is nine days of not being able to catch up on a calorie deficit. The amateur version of this failure is smaller and just as real: the long ride where you bonk at hour four is usually not a fitness problem, it is a stomach you never trained to take carbohydrate at the rate a long day demands.

Recovery treated as a session. In a stage race, sleep and food between stages are the training. Outside one, this is the least glamorous and highest-return habit available: the difference between an athlete who can do three quality sessions a week for a year and one who can do five for a month.

For the Rider With No Race At All

Half of what I just wrote assumes a start line, so here is the version that does not.

The thing this route rewards is not peaking. It is the ability to keep showing up at a decent standard on a day when you are already tired, over and over, without breaking. That is the same quality that decides whether somebody riding for their own fitness is still riding in November. There is no start line in that, and it is the same adaptation.

If you are chasing consistency rather than a result, the stage-race lesson is the useful one and the Ventoux headline is not. Nobody's fitness was ever built by the one enormous day. It gets built by the eleventh unremarkable week, and stage racing is just that principle compressed into nine days where you can actually watch it happen.

Where the App Sits In This

Two things here are worth knowing about, because they are the two hardest to eyeball for yourself.

The efficiency factor trend on Fitness Trends is power per heartbeat across comparable aerobic sessions, and it is the closest thing to a durability read that does not require a lab: the same effort costing fewer beats over a block of weeks is the adaptation you are looking for, and it only means anything between like-for-like sessions, which is why the hard and surgy rides are excluded rather than charted alongside.

Best-effort power is the other one, newly on each ride: your best 1, 5, 20 and 60 minutes, worked out from that ride's own second-by-second data rather than from an average. The honest way to use it is not to collect personal bests. It is to compare the same duration across a fresh day and a tired one, which is exactly the fade this whole piece is about. One caveat worth stating plainly: about 95% of a genuinely all-out 20 minutes is the conventional FTP estimate, and a 20-minute best that happened inside a long steady ride is not an all-out effort. It is a data point about durability, which is arguably more interesting anyway.

The Honest Limits Here

I am writing this on the evening of stage 1, with eight days still to ride, so nothing here is a prediction and none of it is analysis of a result that has not happened yet. The route numbers are from the organisers; everything else is one rider's reading of what a route like that demands, not a coaching prescription. Stage-race physiology at the front of a WorldTour peloton and a Saturday group ride are separated by a great deal more than mileage, and training principles that look identical on paper land differently on bodies with different histories, ages and injury records. If you are building toward something big, that is a conversation for a coach who knows yours, not for a blog post.

What is not in doubt is the route. It is the hardest edition of this race yet, by the organisers' own numbers, and it will be decided by the quality nobody puts on a training plan.
