What Actually Carries Over When You Add a New Sport
Michael Woods just retired from the WorldTour into triathlon, gravel, MTB marathon, and skimo. What his engine will carry with him, and what it won't.

Michael Woods spent twelve years as a professional cyclist, won a stage of the Tour de France, and finished fifth in the Tokyo Olympic road race. He announced his retirement from the WorldTour at the end of last season, and the plan for what comes next is not the quiet golf-and-commentary retirement most riders take. He is going into triathlon, gravel racing, mountain bike marathon events, and ski mountaineering, a sport making its Olympic debut this year (Cyclingnews).
Here's the detail that makes this more than a retirement story. Woods didn't start as a cyclist. He won 1,500m gold at the 2005 Pan American Junior Championships, set Canadian junior national records in the mile and 3000m the same year, and raced on a track scholarship at Michigan. A recurring stress fracture in his foot, the kind of injury that comes from a training load a body can't yet absorb, forced him out of running in 2007 before that career got anywhere near its ceiling (Wikipedia). He took up cycling as cross-training because it didn't hurt, friends talked him into racing, and it turned out he had a WorldTour engine hiding inside a broken runner.
Now he's putting running back into the mix alongside triathlon, gravel, and skimo, events he name-checked directly when he announced the plan: Pierra Menta, Ironman, Leadville, Unbound. His own framing of the project is almost exactly the question this post is about: after fifteen years building an aerobic base in one sport, how does that engine hold up against specialists in several others (Domestique)?
The Engine Travels. The Tissue Doesn't.
Most of us treat "fitness" as one thing, but it's really two things wearing the same word. There's the aerobic engine, the heart's stroke volume, the mitochondrial density, the capillary bed, the whole cardiovascular machinery that shows up on a chart as your CTL climbing over months. And there's the local, sport-specific tolerance: the tendons, the joint surfaces, the neuromuscular pattern that lets your body absorb the specific repeated stress of running, or swimming, or skinning up a mountain on skis.
The engine transfers remarkably well. This is not folk wisdom, it's why cross-training works at all: a well-built aerobic base shows up as a higher ceiling in whatever sport you point it at next. Woods will not be starting his triathlon career with a beginner's cardiovascular system. The mitochondria don't know they were built pedaling a bike.
The tissue tolerance does not transfer, or transfers far less than the engine does. Running load is running load. It doesn't care that you can hold 300 watts for twenty minutes. Your Achilles, your tibia, your foot's ability to absorb impact thousands of times a run, none of that gets trained by years on a bike, because a bike never asks it to do that job. This is precisely the gap that broke Woods as a runner the first time: a training system that could push his cardiovascular capacity faster than his skeleton could adapt to carrying it.
Why This Trips People Up (Even Without a Sport Switch This Dramatic)
You don't have to be retiring from a WorldTour contract for this to be relevant. It's the same trap waiting for the cyclist who decides to run a fall marathon on their bike fitness, the swimmer who takes up trail running because their friends do it, or the triathlete coming off an injury who feels their legs are "there" because their FTP test says so.
The mistake has a specific shape: you feel strong, because the engine really is strong, and you read that feeling as permission to progress the new sport's volume the way you'd progress in the sport you already know. A jump in weekly load that a cyclist's legs would shrug off can do real damage as a jump in running mileage, because the constraint was never the engine. It was always the tissue, and the tissue adapts on its own, much slower timeline.
This is a big part of why running progression gets treated more conservatively than cycling progression in any coaching framework worth following, and it's not because running is a "harder" sport in some vague sense. It's about impact. Every foot strike is a small collision your skeleton has to absorb, over and over, thousands of times per run, and that structure adapts on a timeline measured in months, not the weeks an aerobic engine can improve in. Swimming carries a version of the same rule for a different reason: shoulder tissue and stroke technique are the limiter, not lung capacity, so volume has to respect the technique, not the fitness behind it.
One Variable at a Time
The practical rule that falls out of this is almost boringly simple, which is probably why it works: when you're adding a sport your engine is ready for but your tissue isn't, progress one variable. Not frequency and duration and intensity all climbing together because your legs feel great. Pick the one that matters most for that sport (for running, that's usually total volume) and let the others hold steady while it moves.
It also means paying attention to what a session is actually asking of your body, separate from what your fitness watch says you're capable of producing. A workout that's genuinely easy for your cardiovascular system can still be too much for a joint or a tendon that's three weeks into a sport it's never done. The two questions, "can your heart and lungs do this" and "can your connective tissue absorb this," have different answers, and the second one is usually the one that ends a comeback.
There's a small, honest silver lining buried in this too. If you're the athlete adding a new sport rather than the one starting from zero, you get to skip a stage most beginners are stuck in, because your body already knows how to pace effort, read a fatigue signal, and structure a week. You're not starting over. You're just building a second foundation under an engine that already exists, and that's a genuinely different, faster process than a true beginner's first year, as long as you respect that it's still a foundation and not a shortcut.
Where the Numbers Actually Help
This is exactly the kind of transition where training-load tracking earns its keep, and it's worth naming what that looks like in practice rather than treating "track your load" as a slogan. If you're folding running back into a mostly-cycling year, what keeps you honest isn't a feeling, it's seeing the effort score attached to each run and knowing which input actually produced it, because a run tracked off duration alone and a run tracked off a measured pace zone are telling you two different quality levels of the same number. Threshold pace and CSS now get their own dedicated zones for running and swimming rather than borrowing FTP math built for a bike, which matters more than it sounds like it should: a sport-specific threshold means the intensity you're prescribing yourself actually reflects that sport's demand, not a proxy from a different one.
None of that replaces the conservative-progression rule above. It just makes it easier to actually follow, because you can see the volume climbing in black and white instead of trusting a feeling that, as Woods's own history shows, can be badly wrong about what the tissue is ready for. If you're not chasing a specific event through this, and plenty of people adding a new sport aren't racing it, that's still a real goal worth structuring for. Consistency, not a finish line, is the whole point for a lot of us, and that's worth building a plan around rather than treating as the fallback for people without a race on the calendar.
The Honest Limits Here
Woods's story is a good illustration of a real training principle, not proof of one. One athlete's injury history, however well documented, doesn't establish a rule about how fast anyone's tendons adapt, and a professional cyclist retiring into multisport with a full-time training budget and access to physio is not a controlled comparison for the rest of us fitting a new sport around a job. The distinction between aerobic and tissue adaptation is genuine physiology and shows up consistently across coaching literature on cross-training and impact progression, but the exact pace at which any individual's body can absorb a new sport's load is not something a blog post, or a training app, can tell you. That's a conversation for a coach who knows your history, or a physio if something already hurts, not a formula.
What is worth taking from it: if you're feeling strong enough to add a sport, believe your engine. Just don't let it write checks your tendons haven't agreed to cash yet.
